Weaving Wellness with Wisdom

Whenua Ora,Tangata Ora

AuOra develops products that solve consumer health problems using the active ingredients obtained from the natural resources of our land and ocean. We call this Whenua Ora, Tangata Ora: enhancing our natural world and our quality of life. Central to this is our overarching belief that the wellbeing of others is paramount.

Our talented people combine traditional knowledge with scientific research so that we can bring hihiritanga – innovation - to market for the benefit of people who want to lead healthier, more rewarding lives. It’s about doing things better and doing better things. It’s about taking the best of the old ways and the new ones. And it’s about putting regenerative and restorative practices into action.

AuOra brings different strands of knowledge together in a collaborative manner to connect people back to culture, bring cultures together, and foster health and wellbeing today and into the future.

Whenua and Taonga — Land and Treasure

Blessed by a favourable climate the Nelson, Golden Bay and Motueka region that is our home has long produced wonderful harvests from land and ocean. Our families have always been entrepreneurs and innovative - gardeners, fishermen, orchardists, artisans and providores.

AuOra takes this to the next level creating solutions from locally and wider sourced Aotearoa New Zealand plants and organisms, marine, protein and horticulture as we seek to be a global leader in functional foods, beverages, and ingredients. Our focus is using the highest quality natural products to solve problems in the selected health areas of metabolic, brain, pain, digestive and skin.

We are protecting our natural resources

We protect existing ecosystems and enhance them through native seedling collection and planting native trees, combining functional elements with whenua ora ones. The practice of nurturing and giving back to the land is paramount to our beliefs and culture.

We are protecting and enhancing our precious and natural resources by working towards zero waste. We are doing this by holding fast to our values of kaitiakitanga and rangatiratanga, which require us to nurture and sustain the mauri lifeforce of our whenua land, wai water and taiao earth. This is reflected in practices such as: reducing waste sent to landfill; tracking and designing out waste; avoiding single-use items; and aiming to use 100% reusable, recyclable or composting packaging by 2025 or earlier.

Whatungarongaro te tangata, toitū te whenua.
The people fade from view, but the land remains.

Doing better things together

AuOra aspires to be at the leading edge in nutrition, health and wellbeing initiatives that are underpinned by our tikanga - customary knowledge and practices.

In order to take the best of traditional knowledge and science, we work closely with experts in many fields.

We have developed solutions and undertaken research in partnership with New Zealand government agencies, research institutes, and innovative businesses. Further to this, we already have - and warmly welcome new - international partnerships.

Our programmes of work include research and business development in the areas of marine and horticulture, indigenous plants and working with existing health and wellness businesses in New Zealand and internationally to co-design solutions for local and global markets.

Our programmes

include Taketake a Tāne, Indigenous Organisms to help connect our whānau, families back to their whenua, land, ocean and freshwater and to examine customary use and assess biological functionality. We have also established the Te Tauihu Native Plant Library to protect plant species native to New Zealand and endemic ones – in our region alone there are over 100 plant species unique to this area.

And amongst other initiatives we are looking at using traditional methodologies to establish proof of provenance.
